LANGUAGE, CULTURAL AND INTERGENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES

Benefits:

Staff gain insights into language, cultural and inter-generational differences that promote or inhibit positive relationships and person centred care in health and social care settings from the standpoint of older people.

Participants:  managers, lead staff, activity co-ordinators, care staff, support services staff. 

Learning outcomes: participants will be able to: 

1.      Describe some of the different beliefs of residents and staff about care giving, illness and death encountered in health and social care settings.

2.      Identify ways of responding to cultural differences in language that promotes a good experience for the resident and the staff.

3.      Describe practical ways of seeking to comply with the dietary customs of the resident associated with cultural beliefs.

4.      Using examples, describe practical ways in which staff can seek to comply with a resident’s customary religious practices.

5.      Using examples, describe contrasting attitudes and life style choices between younger and older people that may promote or adversely affect positive relationships and person centred care from the perspective of the resident.

6.      Identify a learning need and agree an action plan with a timescale for completion
